We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

A vesta case is a small pocket-sized container designed to hold vestas, which were an early type of friction match introduced in the mid-19th century. They became highly popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as gentlemen and ladies carried matches safely to ignite tobacco pipes, cigars, and gas lighting.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often featuring hinged lids, internal striker ridges at the base, and suspension loops for attachment to watch chains or chatelaines. The bodies were typically formed through pressing or stamping, followed by hand-engraving or embossing with decorative motifs.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating silver purity (such as the lion passant for sterling), a city assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of assay.

Small antique silver pieces can be displayed on a bookshelf, incorporated into a tabletop vignette on a coffee table, or kept inside a glass-topped display tray alongside other small curiosities to add historical texture and metallic sheen to a room.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and specialised silver polish only when necessary to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive materials that can wear away fine engraving. Storing the piece in a dry, low-humidity environment helps prevent rapid re-tarnishing.
