A vinaigrette is a small pocket container used during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar, designed to mask unpleasant odours.

They were typically crafted from sterling silver with an interior gilding of gold wash to protect the metal from the acidic vinegar, featuring intricately pierced and engraved grilles.

Authenticity is determined by checking for clear silver hallmarks including the makers mark, standard mark, town mark, and duty mark, alongside period-appropriate hand-engraving and construction.

These pieces function well as cabinet curiosities, displayed on small stands or within glass-fronted display cases alongside other miniature silver objects.

Silver should be cleaned sparingly with a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain the patina, avoiding harsh dips that can damage the delicate gilt interior.
