Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian bureau de dame is in the French Louis XV Revival style and is constructed from dark reddish-brown mahogany with brass inlay and ormolu mounts. The slant-front writing desk features a sloping lid decorated with intricate brass foliate inlay and a centrally mounted key, opening to reveal a birds-eye maple interior. Graceful cabriole legs sweep downwards, fitted with decorative metal mounts at the shoulders. Measuring 92 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the compact piece offers a dedicated workspace suitable for a living room, study, or bedroom writing corner. The refined silhouette and classical decorative motifs bring traditional elegance to both modern and period home interiors.

FAQs

A bureau de dame is a compact, slant-front writing desk designed specifically for women, originating in 18th-century France during the Louis XV period.

These desks are traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often incorporating brass inlay, gilt-bronze mounts, and fitted interior drawers.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joinery, original iron or brass locks with natural oxidisation, and hand-cut brass or tortoiseshell inlay.

Position the desk as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or living area, pairing it with neutral walls and modern lighting to highlight the woodwork.

Dust the timber surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, taking care to avoid lifting fragile brass edges with polishes or cloths.
