FAQs

Cast iron portrait plaques gained popularity during the 19th century as industrial casting techniques advanced, allowing for the mass reproduction of classical artworks, historical figures, and artistic monuments for domestic and public display.

These pieces were typically produced using sand casting methods, where a pattern was pressed into moulding sand to create a cavity into which molten iron was poured, resulting in durable metalwork with high textural detail.

Authenticity is determined by examining the crispness of the relief casting, natural oxidisation patterns, weight, casting seams, and the presence of historical mounting fixtures or foundry marks typical of nineteenth-century production.

Large cast iron pieces serve as strong focal points when mounted on neutral walls, adding industrial weight and historical gravitas that balances clean modern architectural lines.

Preservation involves dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the metal surface from moisture and active corrosion without altering the original patina.
