This Victorian sterling silver christening mug tankard originates from London 1871. The upright vessel sits upon three spherical ball feet and possesses a simple C-scroll handle. Its polished silver surface features extensive hand-engraving, including an upper frieze of entwined scrolling strapwork, a central geometric border of inverted garlands, and lower pendant motifs resembling inverted fleur-de-lys. The cylindrical body maintains a broad rim and an open interior. Measuring 9 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, this item suits placement on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. The physical presentation exhibits the original chased details and traditional hollowware construction typical of nineteenth-century domestic silverware.

During the Victorian era, silver christening mugs were traditional gifts presented to infants by godparents or relatives to mark baptism ceremonies, serving as both practical keepsakes and financial investments in sterling silver.

Victorian silver cups were typically crafted from sterling silver (925 purity) using techniques such as hand-chasing, engine turning, and line engraving, often raised on circular bases or small spherical ball feet.

Authenticity is verified through official British assay hallmarks, which include the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, a leopards head for London, a date letter, and the monarch duty mark.

Antique silver hollowware can be displayed on a sideboard top, curated shelf, or desk as an accent piece, either individually or grouped with other historic metalwork to add textural variation.

Preserve sterling silver by polishing gently with a specialised silver cloth or non-abrasive silver foam, avoiding harsh chemical dips, and storing in low-humidity environments to minimise oxidisation.
