FAQs

Victorian oil lamps became widely popular during the 19th century following advancements in burner technology and the commercial availability of kerosene and paraffin, serving as the primary domestic light source before widespread electrification.

These lamps typically featured a combination of metals such as silver plate, brass, or cast iron for the base and burner mechanisms, paired with hand-painted ceramic, glass, or majolica fonts and glass chimneys.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate makers marks on the burner mechanism, traditional weight and construction methods in the metal casting, hand-painted details on the font, and age-related wear to the silver plating or metal components.

An antique oil lamp works well as a sculptural focal point on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece, bridging historical character with contemporary interior aesthetics.

Silver-plated items should be cleaned gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish to maintain the finish without wearing away the underlying plating, avoiding harsh chemicals and excessive moisture.
