Rare Antique Sauj Bulagh Carpet

19th century
Description

Dating from around 1850-1860 this stunning and richly coloured Antique Sauj Bulagh carpet is in exceptional original condition.  Woven from the Kurdish region in the far North-West of Persia. They are known for combining elements of classical Persian drawings with a bold and vividly colourful village aesthetic. This early Sauj Bulagh carpet uses the classic Persian all-over 'Herati pattern' used in the 18th century, which depicts two fish swimming around a water-lily, which can be seen more clearly on this large scale in the main field. As they do look like fish almost....the wool is very soft and lustrous and the colours are deep with an almost black background, which is deep blue.

The large scale border design is really amazing with a pattern of what is believed to be a turtle with flowers in-between.  Early yellow dyes have been used with rich red tones to create a beautiful large border.

This large rectangular hand-knotted antique Sauj Bulagh carpet dates from the period around 1850. Originating from the Kurdish region in the north-west of Persia, the wool construction has a soft, lustrous finish in deep navy blue, terracotta red, and early yellow tones. The design includes a dark navy blue central field filled with intricate floral motifs and vine scrolls, framed by a broad terracotta red main border containing turtle and floral patterns. The visible details comprise a traditional all-over Herati pattern across the field, multi-strand guard borders, and densely packed floral palmettes. The piece measures 590 cm high, 250 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, providing a substantial ground covering. It suits placement on a spacious floor in a gentleman's library or principal reception room, where it anchors a large seating arrangement or grand dining space.

Sauj Bulagh carpets originate from the Kurdish region of north-west Persia, noted for saturated natural dyes, thick wool construction, and classical Persian motifs combined with village weaving traditions.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable wool or cotton foundation, coloured with vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authenticity is indicated by rich colour depthoften featuring deep navy blues and terracotta tonespliable handle, subtle asymmetry in the hand-knotted structure, and dye variations known as abrash.

A densely patterned carpet grounds neutral contemporary spaces by pairing naturally with timber furniture, leather seating, and muted linen upholstery.

Vacuum regularly on a low-suction setting without a rotary brush bar, rotate the carpet annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, and treat spills immediately by blotting with cold water.
