This antique Kurdish runner or corridor carpet dates from circa 1900. It is a wool floor covering worked in a Kurdish tribal style, presenting a rectangular format measuring 462 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. The piece has a dark indigo blue ground colour with terracotta and navy tones, alongside pastel colours and ivory highlights. An all-over repeating shrub lattice pattern runs through the centre, framed by a multi-band geometric repeating border with visible floral motifs. Slight even wear and a good pile are visible across the surface, reflecting its period character. Hand-washed and ready for use or display, the runner is suitable for normal domestic use in an English country house interior. It functions practically as a hallway carpet or corridor rug to warm up transitional spaces in a home today.

Kurdish runners originated from nomadic and village weavers across the Kurdish regions of Northwestern Persia and Eastern Anatolia. These carpets are distinguished by robust hand-knotted construction, geometric motifs, and rich vegetable-dyed colour palettes suited for narrow residential spaces.

Traditional Kurdish carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. Natural plant dyes and minerals provide the characteristic dark blue, terracotta red, and ivory hues.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit slight asymmetry in pattern execution, soft wear patterns on the wool pile, and a heavy, pliable handle. Natural dye abrasion, known as abrash, creates subtle horizontal color variations across the field.

A long tribal runner introduces historical depth and texture to hallway corridors, entryway foyers, or narrow gallery spaces. The dark tones ground neutral architectural schemes while complementing both timber floorboards and stone tiling.

Routine maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool knots. A high-quality underlay should be placed beneath the runner to prevent slipping and reduce friction wear.
