Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Nouveau coal scuttle from 1900 is an English Country House piece made from sheet and cast brass with a warm brass colour. The design includes a raised whiplash foliage embossing on the hood, an upright swing handle with round joints, and a decorative clover-shaped mount on the side. The vessel rests on a stepped pedestal base and contains a matching brass coal scoop with an open handle resting inside. Surface wear is visible across the metal body alongside natural ageing and minor marks. Dimensions are 46 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, giving it a practical scale for domestic use. Traditional coal scuttles suit placement directly on the fireplace hearth to store fuel within reach of an open fire. Alternatively, the piece functions as an interior decorative accessory for a period living room, study, or hallway setting. The sturdy construction holds logs or coal safely while adding a historical design accent to a hearth area without requiring permanent installation.

FAQs

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Art Nouveau coal scuttles are decorative fireside containers featuring stylised organic motifs, flowing whiplash curves, and functional metal construction designed to hold coal near a hearth.

Antique scuttles are primarily constructed from sheet brass or copper, often supported by riveted iron or cast brass bases, and fitted with turned wood or metal swing handles alongside matching shovel scoops.

Authentic period pieces display hand-embossed or repousse stylised botanical patterns, natural surface patination, folded metal seams with rivets, and age-consistent wear along the base and interior joints.

Position the scuttle beside a fireplace hearth to hold firewood or kindling, or recontextualise it in an entryway or living room as an accent vessel for dried floral arrangements.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and clean periodically using a specialised metal polish or microcrystalline wax to preserve the aged surface finish and prevent unwanted oxidisation.
