Description

1788-1823, George III period English hallmarked solid silver cutlery canteen or table service for 12 people, in the unusual and stylish Reeded Old English pattern, and including a large bone handled knife canteen.

This is a very well balanced and elegant canteen with great proportions, a rare find. All silver pieces were London made between 1788-1823, by very good makers, mainly by the famous William Eley and William Fearn and associates.

The canteen was owned by the same family for many years, and the silver is fitted into a period two tiered oak case. The hallmarks are clear, and there are no monograms or crests. The set comprises 64 solid silver pieces, plus 29 bone handled knives with carving set, or 93 pieces in total.

The 12 seven piece place settings comprise a solid siver dinner fork, dessert fork, table spoon, dessert spoon, teaspoon, and 4 silver serving pieces including a large basting/gravy spoon, a pair of sauce ladles and a long mustard ladle with gilded bowl. Complementary silver pieces are available in stock, which can be added to the canteen if desired.

In addition, included is a lovely and complementary set of 24 bone handled dinner and dessert knives with matching 5 piece carving set, made by famous makers Mappin and Webb and fitted into its own original wood case with key.

The breakdown of the pieces is as follows:

Dessert forks-all London 1815 by Wms. Eley and Fearn.

Dinner forks-6 London 1795 by George Smith (Fearn's apprentice) and

Wm. Fearn, 2 London 1814 by Eley and Fearn, 3 London 1818 by William Chawner (also associated with Eley and Fearn), and 1 London 1821 by Eley and Fearn.

Teaspoons are all made by Robert Peppin (specialist spoon maker). 11 London 1823 and 1 London 1820.

Dessert spoons are all made by Robert Peppin and are all London 1823.

Table spoons-2 London 1788 by Richard Crossley, 7 London 1814 by Eley and Fearn, and 3 London 1821 by Eley and Fearn.

The large gravy spoon is by Robert Peppin and is London 1823.

The mustard ladle is by Robert Peppin and is London 1822.

The sauce ladles are made by James Young and are London 1810.
