The George IV period, spanning from 1820 to 1830, is characterised by a heavy reliance on classical Roman, Greek, and Gothic influences, often featuring substantial proportions, dark timbers such as mahogany and rosewood, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany, oak for secondary framing, and fine veneers, frequently incorporating tooled leather inserts known as skivers on the writing surfaces along with cast brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails in drawer construction, patination consistent with age, hand-turned or carved solid timber legs, and original brass castors.

An antique writing table serves as a functional focal point when paired with modern minimalist seating to create contrast, or used traditionally within a home office or living space against neutral walls.

Maintenance involves applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and treating leather skivers with specialist neutral balms to prevent cracking.
