This Victorian butter dish pairs a clear cut glass bowl with a silver-plated cover and matching underplate. The circular glass body displays geometric side cuts, a radiating starburst base, and a metallic silver colour scheme overall. The fitted lid carries an engraved continuous wreath of ivy leaves, a fluted rim, and a turned central finial handle. A matching underplate echoes the engraved ivy pattern along its broad rim. Light surface wear on the silver plate indicates age and gentle use, while the glass remains free of chips and cracks. Measuring 7.5 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, this item sits appropriately on a sideboard top for daily service or formal dining. It fits comfortably within an English Country House interior as a functional serving piece for butter or preserves at the breakfast table, tea service, or dinner party.

Popular during the late 19th century, this type of table serveware consists of a glass liner designed to hold butter, enclosed within a decorative silver-plated stand and fitted lid to keep the contents cool during meals.

These items typically feature electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) components decorated via machine spinning or hand engraving, combined with hand-cut or molded lead crystal glass liners.

Authentic pieces usually carry makers marks, electroplate stamps (such as EPNS), period-appropriate engraved foliate or geometric motifs, and heavy cut glass showing minor signs of historic wear.

Beyond serving butter on a formal dining table, these vessels can be placed on a sideboard or dressing table to hold small items such as jewellery, keys, or bath salts.

Clean the glass liner by hand using warm water and mild detergent, while polishing the silver-plated exterior gently with a specialised silver cloth to remove oxidisation without stripping the thin silver layer.
