Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early Victorian library writing table originates from 1850. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, the piece incorporates a dark leather inset writing surface and brass castors. The freestanding desk includes multiple storage drawers fitted with small turned wooden knobs, while the robust legs show distinctive turned woodwork. A few drawer handles are missing, and the leather surface remains intact with standard signs of age. Measuring 74 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 91 cm deep, the table provides a practical workspace with a kneehole height of 60 cm. Positioned in a study, home office, or traditional living area, the desk functions as a writing workspace or display table. The substantial proportions and finished reverse side allow placement in the centre of a room away from walls. The classic design coordinates with traditional interior furnishings.

FAQs

Victorian library writing tables are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. They feature a flat top often inset with leather, drawers incorporated into the apron or pedestals, and substantial turned or carved legs, frequently finished with brass castors.

Nineteenth-century desks were primarily built from dense timber, with Cuban or West Indian mahogany being highly favoured for its stability and rich colour. Surface tops were frequently lined with gold-tooled hide leather, while drawer linings were made of oak or pine held together with hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic Victorian pieces display period-specific features such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural timber wear, original brass castors, and turned wooden or cast metal drawer knobs. The underside of the table top should show traditional hand-sawn wood marks and historic framing techniques.

An antique writing table can serve as a focal point in a home office, library, or living room alcove. Modern styling includes pairing the piece with contemporary brass task lighting, minimalist desktop accessories, and a supportive leather or upholstered desk chair.

Mahogany furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent warping and bleaching. Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, and nourish the timber using a high-quality beeswax polish applied along the grain.
