Description

Original George V1 1937 Coronation Stool, Limed Oak with Velvet Seat Intact.

A fine quality example of an original 1937 George V1 coronation stool by Gillows. Lined oak frame with original velvet seat and hem with no tears or significant defects, an elegant country house condition.

Recently acquired via the direct family descendants that attended the ceremony and Westminster Cathedral where each guest was invited to buy their stools or chairs as a souvenir and way to contribute towards the cost of the event.

Many examples of these have been well used with torn fabric or weak frame joints. This stands well with no wobbles or loose joints whilst the fabric retains good colour and suffered no tears.

This George VI coronation stool originates from the 1930 period in an English Country House style. The piece consists of a limed oak frame with warm brown tones, supporting a concave velvet seat in a blue-grey shade finished with gold braided trim. Four straight, chamfered legs support the structure, showing age-appropriate wear to the timber surface while the intact upholstery exhibits no tears or significant defects. Measuring 47 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the stool stands firm with solid joints and no wobbling. Property owners typically place this compact seating at the foot of a bed or position it within a dressing room as a historical accent piece or functional bedroom seat.

Coronation stools were commissioned for guests attending the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey in May 1937. Manufactured by British firms such as Waring & Gillow, attendees were permitted to purchase their stools after the ceremony as historical keepsakes.

These stools were primarily constructed from solid limed oak, featuring chamfered square legs, a curved concave wooden seat frame, cotton webbing, upholstery padding, and velvet fabric trimmed with woven braid.

Authentic pieces feature a stamped mark on the underside of the oak frame, usually reading GEORGE VI alongside the year 1937 and a crown motif, often accompanied by a makers stamp or broad arrow mark.

Due to its compact dimensions and neutral profile, a coronation stool functions effectively as a dressing table seat, an entry hallway accent, or positioned at the foot of a bed in traditional and contemporary schemes.

Dust the velvet seat using a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner and keep the stool away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading. Clean the limed oak legs with a dry cloth and apply a neutral beeswax sparingly if required.
