This early nineteenth-century Regency portrait miniature shows a young man wearing a dark blue coat, a high black cravat, and white linen. The detailed watercolour painting sits inside a polished oval brass bezel, surrounded by a smooth black octagonal ebonised wood frame that shows minor surface wear. The piece measures 16 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 0.5 cm deep. Ideal for placement on a bookshelf or a collector's desk in a gentleman's library, the miniature adds historical character to interior spaces. It sits securely on flat surfaces and brings a classic nineteenth-century aesthetic to traditional and transitional home interiors.

FAQs

A portrait miniature is a small-scale, highly detailed portrait painted on ivory, vellum, or paper, designed as a personal, portable keepsake or token of affection during the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

These works were traditionally executed in watercolour or gouache on thin ivory or card panels, protected by glass and encased in oval brass bezels with ebony, lacquered, or papier-mache outer frames.

Authentic pieces display historical costume details, such as high cravats and tailored coats, alongside hand-painted brushwork under period glass and original brass or wooden framing.

A portrait miniature can be displayed on a bookshelf, incorporated into a gallery wall, or placed on a mantlepiece easel to add historic interest to a contemporary scheme.

Store the item away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading, avoid opening sealed bezels, and clean the glass frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
