Bijar Rug

19th century
Description

One of my favourite types of rug, these old Bijars never fail to please with their shining colours and intricate designs. They have a certain quality which is hard to define, I think they look a hundred years older than they actually are whilst working in almost any situation. Many oriental rugs clash with different decors with their bold designs and bright colours.

Bijar rugs are highly decorative, they appear to pull off the trick of being complex and busy but retaining a quiet subtle beauty. The abrash in the light blue is breathtaking and the border intoxicating. As ever this is as tough as they come, as I always say ‘you can park your car on them’.

Allover wear but nothing of concern. There is a small repair in the middle and some loss to one end. Otherwise this is an extremely robust rug.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Bijar Rug to the 19th Century.

Measuring 248 cm high and 149 cm wide, the piece serves as a durable textile suitable for placement on the floor in various living spaces throughout a home.

FAQs

Bijar rugs originate from the Kurdish region of northwestern Iran and are famed for their exceptionally heavy, dense weave, often earned the title of the iron rugs of Persia due to their structural durability.

These carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile on a cotton or wool foundation, utilising a heavy wet-warp technique where wet threads are pounded down tightly to create an extremely rigid and hard-wearing fabric.

Authentic Bijar rugs are recognisable by their dense weight, stiff structure that resists folding, intricate central diamond medallions, Herati pattern fields, and rich colour palettes dominated by deep madder red and navy blue.

A classic red and navy Persian rug provides visual grounding beneath neutral contemporary seating, pairs seamlessly with polished hardwood floorboards, and adds texture to both minimalist and traditional interiors.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush beat bar prevents fibre damage, while prompt spot-cleaning with mild soapy water and periodic professional hand-washing ensure the wool stays preserved.
