Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This small English Country nineteenth-century bureau comes in oak with a painted dark grey exterior and an off-white interior. The fall-front slant lid drops to reveal a fitted interior with pigeonholes and small drawers, while the lower section provides three exterior drawers fitted with brass swan-neck handles and keyhole escutcheons. The piece stands on bracket feet beneath a shaped apron. Visible signs of age include surface wear and distressing to the dark paintwork and lighter interior finish. The bureau measures 111 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, with a desk height of 82 cm. It serves as a practical writing desk and storage chest in a bedroom, home study, or hallway.

FAQs

A bureau secretaire is a compact piece of writing furniture featuring a slant-front lid that folds down to create a writing surface, revealing internal drawers and pigeonholes above a chest of storage drawers.

Traditional English bureaux were constructed primarily from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often fitted with brass swan-neck handles, iron locks, and hand-cut dovetail drawer joints.

Authentic period bureaux feature hand-sawn drawer linings, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and signs of age-appropriate wear along the slant-front hinges.

A painted bureau secretaire serves as a functional statement piece in a hallway, living room, or study, providing concealed storage while allowing the drop-front surface to display books or stationery.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources to prevent the timber from warping or the paint from flaking.
