Wrought iron strapwork with hand-rolled scrolls: typical hearth ironwork of the period.
Dark natural oxidisation on the reverse: many decades of exposure to hearth heat.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The mellow amber copper ground displays repoussé botanical relief decoration depicting various fruits. The iron surround includes decorative scrolls to the base and terminates in four downswept legs with pointed feet. The piece measures 75 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Suitable for fireplace dressing or as a decorative accent in a hearth, this item suits placement before an active or decorative fireplace in a living room, study, or traditional interior. The cleaned and polished finish retains a soft patina across the metal surfaces.

FAQs

Emerging in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass industrial production, Arts and Crafts fire screens were designed to celebrate visible hand craftsmanship and decorative metalwork around the domestic hearth.

Fire screens from the Arts and Crafts era typically featured hand-hammered copper or brass panels set within wrought iron, cast iron, or carved timber frames.

Authentic period screens exhibit hand-planished surfaces, repousse relief motifs, riveted joints, and hand-forged ironwork showing subtle variations characteristic of manual artisan work.

Place the screen directly on the fireplace hearth or inside an unused chimney opening to introduce warm metallic tone and structural texture to the living space.

Dust the iron frame with a dry cloth and lightly wipe the copper panel with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes to retain the natural surface oxidisation.
