Antique 18th Century Welsh Oak Dresser

18th century
Description

An exceptionally pretty antique 18th century Welsh oak dresser of open-base, potboard form, made from well-figured timber with wonderful variation and intensity of colour and patina. The enclosed dresser rack has three shelves, partially shaped sides and a broad timber back, with original iron hooks to the top and cut-out grooves to one shelf, historically used for displaying and storing spoons. The rack slots into place within the raised plinth at the back of the base. The base is fitted with three drawers with later swan-neck brass handles, all perfectly in keeping with the piece. Below is a potboard supported by attractive shaped supports. A lovely example with glorious colour and patina.

Dimensions:

Height – 196cm/ Width - 148cm/ Depth - 43cm / Surface Height - 69cm

.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks to the surface top, shelves and front. Evidence of historic woodworm, particularly to the back legs, which is long inactive and has been treated as a precaution. Two blocks have been added to level the dresser, which historically leaned backwards against a wall. The dresser rack is top-heavy and will need to be secured to the wall for safe use. Drawers run well, and the piece is solid and sound. Overall, a lovely example.

Our experienced carpenter meticulously inspects, repairs, and restores each item in our collection. This ensures that every piece you purchase from us is ready to be seamlessly incorporated into your home. To provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the item’s condition, we kindly request that you take a moment to thoroughly review all the accompanying photos. FAQs

A Welsh dresser is a traditional piece of regional vernacular furniture originating in Wales, designed with an upper open plate rack to display ceramics above a lower storage base.

Eighteenth-century dressers were constructed primarily from native hardwoods such as English or Welsh oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, wooden pegs, and hand-sawn backboards.

Authentic period dressers exhibit signs of historical hand-crafting, including adze marks on rear panels, hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass hardware, and uneven surface wear from age.

Style the open shelves with modern ceramic vessels, minimalist glassware, or framed art to create a contemporary contrast against the dark patinated timber.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources.
