Hermès, Paris - Large Equestrian Horse Head Desk Clip C.1960

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

An impressive oversized desk clip / paperweight, a heavily weighted, tension clip crafted from high-quality silver plate designed by the creme de la creme of luxury designers and retailers, Maison Hermès of Paris. This exclusive piece was crafted in France, typically dating from circa 1960. During this era, Hermès heavily expanded its lifestyle and desk accessories, frequently collaborating with renowned French silversmith companies like Ravinet d'Enfert to produce high-end metalwork. Signed on the underside "Hermès, Paris / Made in France" and the makers mark for Ravinet d'Enfert.

Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory.

Hermès began in 1837 when Thierry Hermès established an elite harness and saddle workshop in Paris. For its first century, the house focused entirely on equipping the European nobility with leather equestrian goods.

However, as automobiles began replacing horses in the 1920s and 1930s, the family pivoted to lifestyle accessories, travel gear, and luxury home goods. This shift birthed Herm

Excellent condition measuring 8 3/4" x 2" x 2 1/2" tall.

This large desk clip and paperweight originates from France in the mid-twentieth century, attributed to Hermès of Paris with a maker mark for Ravinet d'Enfert. Fashioned from silver-plated metal, the piece presents a bright silver colour and a highly polished surface finish. The design incorporates a heavy tension clip profile with a curved form and a sculpted horse head motif rising from the upper plate. Signatures appear on the underside reading Hermès, Paris and Made in France alongside the maker mark, following professional cleaning and polishing by a silversmith. Practical dimensions measure 6.35 cm high, 22.23 cm wide, and 5.08 cm deep, giving a substantial presence for holding papers and correspondence. Placed on an office desk, library table, or study bureau within a gentleman's library or executive interior, this accessory functions as a desk tidy or paperweight. The equestrian styling complements traditional and luxury workspaces while providing a functional utility for document organisation.

Equestrian imagery has long been associated with European luxury goods, particularly through premier houses that originated as harness makers and saddlers in the nineteenth century. By the mid-twentieth century, functional office items incorporating sculpted horse motifs, stirrups, and bits became standard elements of refined executive desk sets.

Mid-century desk clips and paperweights were typically constructed from cast metal, solid brass, sterling silver, or silver-plated bronze and steel. Premium examples often feature heavy gauge metal formed into spring-tensioned curves combined with cast decorative elements.

Authentic pieces from renowned mid-century makers usually feature crisp maker marks, hallmarks, or stamped country-of-origin signatures near the base or inner folded curve. Quality construction is evidenced by substantial weight, seamless metal joins, and detailed sculptural modeling of the decorative features.

A silver equestrian clip can serve as a functional paperweight on an office desk, a document hold on a console table, or a decorative display object on a curated bookshelf. Its polished finish complements both traditional dark wood surfaces and contemporary minimalist interiors.

Silver accessories should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints and surface oils. To remove tarnish, apply a gentle, non-abrasive silver polish using a soft cotton cloth, taking care around intricate relief carving before buffing to a high shine.
