This large antique wine bottle cooler dates from the first half of the 20th century in the traditional style with a Grand Regency design vibe. Made from silver plate with a silver colour, the piece has a polished interior, rolled rim, plain unadorned basin, and a circular pedestal base, bearing a mark to the base for American silversmith Grand Silver Co with the text Wear-Brite. The item measures 16 cm high, 36.5 cm wide, and 36.5 cm deep. Designed to hold four bottles of champagne nicely, the bowl sits on a raised foot with light surface scratches, small marks, and light pitting and spotting in keeping with its age. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top, the basin provides a practical container for chilling wine, punch, or ice during gatherings in a home dining room, kitchen, or living space.

FAQs

Large silver-plated champagne coolers and punch bowls became prominent in nineteenth-century dining, designed to keep multiple beverage bottles chilled on ice during formal banquets and gatherings.

These vessels are typically constructed from a base metal, such as nickel silver or brass, which is electroplated with a layer of pure silver to achieve a bright metallic surface and robust weight.

Authenticity is evaluated through electroplate stamps, such as EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver), makers marks etched near the rim or underside, and the characteristic wear or base metal show-through on high-contact points.

In contemporary spaces, a large silver bowl serves as a central decorative accent on a sideboard or kitchen island, often utilized as a planter, floral arrangement container, or beverage chiller during entertaining.

Silver-plated items should be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, thoroughly dried with a soft cloth, and periodically polished using specialized non-abrasive silver cream to prevent oxidisation and tarnish.
