Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A serpentine-front chest is defined by its undulating facade, featuring a central convex curve flanked by concave outer curves. Popularised in the eighteenth century across European cabinetry, this shape requires precise joinery and veneer application to follow the curved structure.

Antique walnut commodes typically feature solid timber framing lined with figured walnut veneers, crossbanded borders, and feather-edge inlays. Drawer construction usually incorporates hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, and cast brass handles with key escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of natural age including oxidisation to the timber, irregular drawer lining wear, and hand-sawn wood marks on the reverse panels. Original cast brass fittings, hand-carved feet, and genuine patina in untouched areas further indicate historical authenticity.

A walnut serpentine chest functions effectively as a focal piece in a modern hallway, dining room, or master bedroom. Pairing the rich timber tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary artwork, or modern lighting creates an engaging textural contrast.

Figured walnut requires protection from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of high-grade beeswax nourish the wood without damaging the original finish.
