This Victorian French Provincial commode is formed in a bombe swell silhouette from warm brown walnut with carved drawer fronts and original brass drop handles. The French chateau style piece stands on short cabriole legs and features detailed floral scroll carving across its three drawers, accented by shaped apron mouldings and decorative cast hardware. The natural wood grain displays a polished mid-brown finish with subtle lighter highlights along the curved contours. Measuring 81 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the chest offers practical storage capacity while maintaining a compact footprint suited for placement in a traditional hallway, drawing room, or principal bedroom. In a contemporary interior, the versatile chest functions as a statement dressing table surface, a functional bedside unit, or a decorative console table beneath a mirror or artwork. The traditional construction and characterful timber tones integrate seamlessly with both classic antique furnishings and eclectic modern room schemes.

FAQs

A bombe commode is characterised by its outward-curving front and sides, originating in eighteenth-century France and popularised during the Louis XV Rococo period.

Commodes from this era typically feature solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or fruitwood, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints, carved drawer fronts, and cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-carved details, irregular hand-sawn drawer linings, and natural oxidisation on the brass or bronze hardware.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entryway or living space, pairing its detailed carved woodwork with minimalist contemporary wall art or understated lighting.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft lint-free cloth, and maintain a consistent humidity level away from direct heat sources.
