This French Provincial style chest of drawers dates from 1920 and is made from solid oak in a warm brown colour. The piece has three wide horizontal drawers with moulded fronts, decorated with raised floral relief carvings along the outer edges and fitted with original brass scroll handles. A pierced carved base sits below the lowest drawer, accentuating the shaped and scalloped apron with carved central detail, while the entire structure is supported by block feet. The piece measures 86 cm high, 110 cm wide and 49 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this chest serves as a practical storage unit in a bedroom, hallway or living area. The compact height allows the top surface to function as a display area for lamps, decorative objects or framed photographs, while the deep drawers provide concealed storage for clothing, linens or household items. The traditional French chateau aesthetic integrates well with both traditional rustic interiors and transitional spaces.

French Provincial commodes originated in regional France during the 18th century, combining utilitarian storage with decorative flourishes borrowed from Parisian court styles. Common features include native hardwood construction, serpentine or bow fronts, relief carvings of floral or foliate motifs, and cast brass drop handles.

These chests were typically constructed from solid European oak or regional fruitwoods due to their durability and dense grain structure. Internal drawer linings and back panels often used secondary woods like pine or poplar, while drawer pulls and escutcheon plates were cast in brass or bronze.

Authentic carved pieces feature crisp, varied depths in the relief carving, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and uneven drawer linings showing hand-plane marks. Age-related wear around keyholes and handle mountings, as well as natural timber shrinkage across wide panels, also indicate traditional construction.

Balance the heavy carved timber by placing the piece against a clean, neutral backdrop in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Layer the top surface with modern ceramic vessels, a large wall mirror, or contemporary artwork to create a curated contrast between traditional craftsmanship and minimalist design.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth, following the direction of the wood grain. Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the timber and retain its natural patina, taking care to clean excess wax out of detailed carvings with a soft-bristled brush.
