This eighteenth-century French provincial commode uses warm brown walnut with a natural patina and features three drawers with serpentine fronts, shaped fielded panel carvings, oak linings, and panelled sides. The exterior displays ornate brass handles and escutcheons, a carved serpentine apron along the base, and short square-cut legs. The surface accommodates decorative storage or display in a bedroom, hallway, or living room. Measuring 81 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the compact dimensions suit both traditional and contemporary interiors. The design includes fielded panel sides and a shaped frieze that reflect the provincial style of the period. Both right-hand feet show tipping and old woodworm treatment is present on the timber.

French Provincial furniture originated outside Paris, combining regional cabinetmaking traditions with modified Parisian styles like Louis XV, characterised by moulded panels, serpentine curves, and native hardwoods like walnut.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid regional timber such as walnut or oak, hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-carved drawer fronts, and cast brass hardware including decorative escutcheons and drop handles.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-planed timber, irregular dovetailing inside drawer boxes, period-correct iron or brass fittings, and wear patterns consistent with two centuries of use.

A walnut commode functions well as a focal storage piece in an entryway, living area, or bedroom, offering warm wood tones that balance contemporary minimalist or classic tailored schemes.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or high humidity.
