These George V sterling silver nutcrackers date to 1922 and originate from the workshop of William Bainbridge Reynolds. The solid silver construction exhibits a bright silver tone with a polished finish, complemented by a hinged mechanism, textured interior jaws, and curved handles detailed with chased beaded engraving and a floral finial. Hallmarks stamped inside the handle include the lion for sterling silver, the leopard's head for London, the date letter g for 1922, and the maker's mark WBR. The piece measures 13 cm in length, 3.5 cm in width, and 1.5 cm in depth, weighing 148 g. In a contemporary home, this item sits appropriately on a sideboard top or within a gentleman's library setting as a functional bar accessory or tabletop display piece. The condition comprises light surface scratches and marks consistent with age and gentle handling.

Silver nutcrackers gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as formal dining services became increasingly elaborate. By the early 20th century, silver nutcrackers were standard components of dessert services and bar cart accessories in British households.

Antique silver nutcrackers were typically cast or drop-forged from solid sterling silver (925 purity) to ensure strength under mechanical pressure. The internal jaws were textured or serrated to grip nut shells, and pieces were connected using a heavy-duty central rivet hinge.

Authentic British pieces bear a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal. These include the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office mark (such as a leopard head for London or an anchor for Birmingham), a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and a makers mark.

Silver nutcrackers can be styled on a dining room sideboard, placed on a drinks trolley alongside glassware, or displayed inside a glass cabinet. Their reflective metallic surface contrasts well with dark timber and natural stone surfaces.

Clean silver nutcrackers using a specialized silver polishing cloth or a non-abrasive silver cream to remove oxidisation. Avoid submerging the hinge mechanism in harsh chemical dips, and dry thoroughly after washing to prevent water spotting.
