This antique Ferahan carpet from 1880 is a traditional Persian wool and cotton textile in an unusual square size. The piece exhibits a dense Herati pattern with floral palmettes woven in shades of terracotta, cream, navy blue, and soft natural ivory, surrounded by a multi-stripe terracotta border. Visible details include a thick pile in the middle alongside areas of natural corrosion, low spots, and old repairs, while the ends and sides are newly secured and the pile is very clean. The rug measures 317 cm high and 272 cm wide, making it suited to anchor a living room, dining space, or bedroom in an English country house style interior. The mellow tones and classic botanical motifs provide an established, decorative floor covering that suits traditional and period home settings.

FAQs

Ferahan carpets are hand-woven textiles produced in the Arak region of west-central Persia during the nineteenth century. They are characterized by fine wool pile, tightly spun cotton foundations, soft natural dye palettes, and dense all-over Herati or floral repeating motifs.

Traditional Ferahan rugs are crafted with a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. They utilize asymmetrical (Persian) knots to achieve precise motif definition and subtle colour gradation.

Authentic Ferahan carpets feature subtle abrash (natural colour variations from hand-dyed wool lots), soft terracotta or pale green dyes, fine asymmetric knotting visible on the reverse, and classical composite border patterns such as the turtle or samovar border.

Position the carpet as an anchoring element in a room by placing key seating pieces around or partially on top of it. Contrast the intricate floral pattern with plain upholstery fabrics, clean architectural lines, or modern oak furniture to balance traditional detail with modern simplicity.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar to protect the pile fibers. Use a high-quality rug underlay to prevent wear from foot traffic, rotate the rug annually to ensure even exposure to light, and consult a professional rug restorer for spot cleaning or washing.
