An early twentieth-century maritime table lamp dates to circa 1900. Fashioned from heavy brass with an untouched original aged brass patination, the heavy construction includes a weighted circular base, an articulated gimbal mechanism with visible pivot screws, and an upright bayonet bulb holder at the top. The substantial gauge metal shows visible surface wear and oxidation marks from age. Measuring 31 cm in height with a base diameter of 14 cm, the design suits a gentleman's library or office desk. The lamp requires rewiring for modern use and can stand on a flat surface or be mounted to a wall.

FAQs

A ship gimbal lamp is a maritime lighting fixture fitted with a pivoted support ring, allowing the light source to stay vertical despite the rolling and pitching motion of a boat at sea.

Early gimbal lamps were predominantly constructed from heavy cast brass or bronze due to these metals high resistance to saltwater corrosion and visual durability.

Authentic pieces generally feature cast brass components, heavy counterweighted bases or wall mounts, period-appropriate lampholders, and natural surface patination from long-term exposure to marine environments.

A brass gimbal lamp works well as a task light on an executive office desk, styled within a bookshelf display, or placed on a side table to add an industrial or nautical element to a room scheme.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical patination and natural oxidisation.
