19th Century Leather Cased Brass Travelling Candlesticks, or 'Brighton Buns’

19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

A pair of leather cased brass travelling candlesticks, or 'Brighton buns’

The case opens to form a pair of drip pans into which the candlesticks are attached by screw threads and which can be stored with the pans when travelling. The term ‘Brighton buns’ was coined as a reference to the bun-shape of the case. This pair are of unusual form and one we have not seen before, the light weight brass sticks are mounted in thin morocco leather, or skiver, a design consideration for items used when in transit to protect them and perhaps deaden any noise, or rattle when on the move.

English, circa 1850–1900

These 19th-century Victorian travelling candlesticks, commonly known as 'Brighton buns', comprise a pair of lightweight brass sticks mounted inside a circular, black leather-bound casing with contrasting fine brass stringing and concentric rings. The design includes screw-thread assembly, circular drip pans, and nesting sconces, where the case opens to form the pans for practical use on the move. Visible details encompass the dark black leather finish paired with polished golden-brass components and precise concentric moulding lines on both the case lid and the drip tray bases. The object measures 9 cm high and is suited for display on a home office desk, study bookshelf, or reading table within a gentleman's library setting.

Brighton bun candlesticks are compact, portable lighting devices designed in the 18th and 19th centuries for travel and military campaign use. They unscrew and nest together into a protective bun-shaped casing when not in use.

These items were predominantly cast from brass or bronze for durability during travel, often featuring precision screw threads. Many examples were fitted with turned wooden or leather-covered outer cases to protect the metal components.

Authentic pieces feature handmade or early machine-cut internal threads that allow the two candle sconces to screw together, forming a self-contained sphere or disk. Look for natural surface oxidisation, hand-turned details, and wear consistent with assembly and age.

Display these compact pieces open on an office desk, library bookshelf, or mantelpiece to highlight their mechanical design. Alternatively, present them assembled within their casing alongside antique books or brass desk accessories.

Clean the brass components gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina or damage thread fittings. Treat any original leather casing with a small amount of neutral leather wax or conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
