Brave Fine Art has dated this Antique River Landscape Painting to the 18th Century.
The scene is built around the waterway, which draws the eye deep into the composition.
Beyond, further figures gather along the bank and around the landing place, with smaller boats, masts and buildings gradually receding into the distance.

To the right, Eschard has assembled an interesting group of architectural forms. A tall fortified building rises above the river, joined by gabled houses, walls, towers and an arched entrance at water level. The latter is a particularly clever device as the dark passage allows the eye to travel through the wall and into the town beyond. Figures gathered around the entrance further animate the space and give the impression of a place in constant use.
The level of detail is remarkable. Individual bricks have been picked out across sections of the architecture, masonry is carefully differentiated, tiny windows punctuate distant buildings, and slender weather vanes rise from several rooftops. Even at the far end of the river, minute towers, windmills, boats and masts have been carefully introduced. There's almost always somewhere new for the eye to settle.
The composition relates closely to Eschard's known river landscapes, particularly in the contrast between a densely built riverbank and an expansive stretch of water and sky. His work was strongly influenced by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting, which remained highly admired among French collectors during his lifetime. He adopted many of its familiar motifs but reworked them with the lighter palette and more decorative atmosphere of late 18th-century French painting.
The town itself has not been identified and may well be an imagined or composite view, assembled from northern European architectural forms rather than intended as a precise topographical record. The painting was recently conserved, during which its materials and construction were found to be consistent with a date around 1790, aligning closely with Eschard's known period of activity.
