Oil Painting by George Vicat Cole ,Ra 1883-1893 British

19th century
Description

Cole was born at Portsmouth, the son of landscape painter, George Cole (1810-1883), and in his practice followed his father’s lead with marked success . He exhibited at the British institution at the age of nineteen, and was first represented at the Royal Academy in 1853 . His election as an associate of this institution took place in 1870 and he became an Academician ten years later. He died in London on 6 April 1893. The wide popularity of his work was due partly to the simple directness of his technical method, and partly to his habitual choice of attractive material.

Most of his subjects were found in the counties of Surrey and Sussex, and along the banks of the Thames . One of his largest pictures, the pool of London was bought by Chantrey Fund Trustees in 1888, and was shown in the Tate gallery.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape art featured naturalistic depictions of the countryside, rivers, and rural livestock, often focusing on atmospheric light and detailed sky compositions.

Artists painted using oil pigments mixed with drying oils applied to stretched flax canvas, typically displayed in carved wood and composition plaster gilded frames.

Authentic paintings display age-appropriate craquelure, natural surface oxidisation, traditional stretched canvas backing, and period-correct gilded frames.

Positioning a large framed artwork above a mantelpiece or sideboard creates a focal point, contrasting detailed gilded moulding against contemporary or panelled walls.

Keep the artwork away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting gently with a soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners on canvas or gilding.
