Antique Georgian Period Oil Painting of Horses

19th century
Description

A charming antique Georgian period oil painting of horses. This is English, we would date it from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is a wonderful subject, and being extremely old shows various signs of historical wear and patina. Overall it presents very nicely, with no damage to the canvass. It has been mounted and framed in a later gilt wood frame.

There appears to be some faded writing across the middle, possibly showing the horses names.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian equestrian painting emerged during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Britain, focusing on sporting horses, livestock, and estate landscapes with precise anatomical detail.

Works were typically executed using oil pigments applied to woven linen canvas or timber panels, housed within carved or moulded gilded wood frames.

Authentic period paintings display uniform surface craquelure, natural age-related canvas darkening on the reverse, and period-appropriate stretcher construction.

Mount the artwork as a central focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within a paneled study to add depth and historical character.

Dust the frame and canvas surface lightly using a soft, dry brush, avoid exposure to direct sunlight or moisture, and consult a professional restorer for cleaning.
