Henri Ottmann La Passerelle (The Footbridge)

19th century
For Sale by Darnley Fine Art
Description

Oil on canvas, signed lower right

Image size: 15 x 18 1/4 inches (38.2 x 46.2 cm)

Hand-carved giltwood frame

Provenance

Bernard Toublanc-Michel Collection

This work is one of Ottmann's later pieces, demonstrating his artistic development. In contrast to his earlier pieces, it is much more Impressionist in nature, utilising broad brushstrokes and non-naturalistic colour to a greater extent than his earlier works that took a more detailed approach. In particular, the use of colour hints at Ottmann's experimentation with Fauvism - if he had not died so young in such a tragic accident, who knows where this experimentation could have led the artist in his mature career.

Henry Ottmann Catalogue Raisonné, Bernard Toublanc-Michel, 2020, Lelivredart, p.234

Impressionist landscape painting developed in France during the late nineteenth century, characterised by visible brushstrokes, open composition, and an emphasis on the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.

Artisans typically painted with oil pigments bound with linseed oil applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, mounted over wooden stretcher bars.

Authentication involves evaluating signature consistency, analyzing brushwork technique, examining age-appropriate craquelure, and inspecting period-correct stretchers and canvas weave.

A landscape oil painting can serve as a focal point above focal furniture, framed in either a classic gilded frame for traditional contrast or a minimal timber tray frame for contemporary settings.

Store and display the canvas away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, clean gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid applying unverified varnishes without professional conservation.
