Antique Pair Oil on Board Tondo Landscape Paintings John Bell Mid 19th C

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

A beautiful pair of tondo oil landscape paintings on board by John Bell (English, 1811-1895), of "Knaresborough Castle, Yorkshire", signed and dated lower left "J Bell 1851" and "Bootburn Bridge, Herts", signed and dated indistinctly lower right.

The pair of round landscapes is framed in ornate gilded frames and painted in muted, natural colours with soft light that emphasizes balance, calmness, and the beauty of nature.

Knaresborough Castle has tall trees on one side, framing the view and a calm body of water that stretches into the distance, with mountains.

Bootburn Bridge, Herts, shows a tranquil landscape with water, a prominent tree stands near the centre or slightly to one side, acting as a focal point.

Both paintings are inscribed on the backboards verso:

"original label beneath" John Bell,  "London 1851"

Add some 19th-century English countryside charm with these beautiful "tondo" landscape paintings to any room in your home.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tondo landscape painting features a circular composition, a format originating in classical antiquity and revived during the Renaissance before gaining renewed popularity in nineteenth-century landscape art.

Artists during this period frequently painted with oil-based pigments on wooden boards or stretched canvases, housed within cast plaster and gilded wooden frames.

Authentic pieces often display natural craquelure across the paint layer, aged wooden backing boards, and original gilding on the period frames.

Pair traditional framed landscapes with neutral contemporary walls above a console or sideboard to create a balanced focal point combining historic texture with modern minimalism.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting the ornate frames lightly with a soft, dry brush rather than liquid cleaners.
