Three Exceptional Samson Chelsea-style Reticulated Porcelain Plates Circa 1860

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

We are delighted to offer an extraordinary set of three Edme Samson hard-paste porcelain plates, masterfully crafted in Paris circa 1860. These plates are an exceptional homage to the renowned English Chelsea manufactory, specifically replicating the iconic Gold Anchor period (1756–1769).

The design features a magnificent, alternating border of pierced reticulated trellis panels and relief-molded, three-dimensional cascading bells and floral pendants—a signature Chelsea motif heavily influenced by the Rococo style. Samson's dedication to quality is evident in the flawless execution, making these plates virtually indistinguishable from their 18th-century counterparts.

The central reserves are exquisitely hand-painted with vibrant exotic birds set against delicate floral sprays. The reverse of each plate bears the distinctive gold anchor mark.

Originally conceived as high-end replicas, these Samson pieces are of such impeccable quality that they have long transcended their initial purpose, becoming highly sought-after collector's items in their own right, comparable in value to the original Chelsea analogies.

The plates measure 24 cm in diameter and 3 cm in height, with a combined weight of 1477 grams. The technique involves hard-paste porcelain casting, intricate piercing, relief molding, and polychrome hand-painting with rich gilding.

The condition is exceptional; the vivid enamels and gilding have been strictly verified under UV light, showing only minor, natural wear to the gold on the raised cascading flowers. Such a pristine set of three is a true rarity on the antique market.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Produced in Paris during the nineteenth century, Samson porcelain in the Chelsea style features intricate hand-painted motifs, rich enamel detailing, and delicate reticulated or pierced lattice borders designed to imitate eighteenth-century English soft-paste porcelain models.

Craftspeople utilised fine hard-paste porcelain, meticulously cutting out geometric lattice patterns along the rim by hand prior to initial firing, followed by polychrome enamel decoration and gilded highlights.

Authentic nineteenth-century Samson pieces exhibit precise hard-paste porcelain construction, detailed hand-painted flora or fauna at the centre, and distinctive pseudo-factory marks applied under or over the glaze on the underside.

Mount these plates on a neutral wall surface using coated wire hangers, display them on acrylic stands along a sideboard top, or arrange them inside a lit glass cabinet to highlight the openwork lattice details.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a lightly dampened swab with lukewarm water, avoiding abrasive chemicals, prolonged immersion, or dishwashers to preserve original hand-painted enamels and gilding.
