This Georgian kneehole bureau is an 1800 country-made piece constructed with a pine carcass, heavily figured burr oak fall-front, drawer faces, and central door, complemented by mahogany sides and a base with fruitwood and mahogany crossbanding. The timber exhibits a warm brown colour with rich burr figuring across the top and drawer fronts. The fall-front top incorporates a keyhole escutcheon and a top-mounted key, while the exterior holds a long upper drawer, six small flanking drawers, and a central cabinet door, all fitted with old cast brass drop handles. The desk stands on bracket feet and displays historic restorations alongside recent repairs to the drawer runners. Measuring 92 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the bureau provides a compact writing surface and functional storage suited for a study, bedroom, or living space in an interior setting today.

FAQs

A kneehole bureau features a central recessed opening for legroom flanked by vertical columns of drawers, often incorporating a small central cupboard and a hinged writing flap.

Craftsmen frequently utilised figured native timber veneers such as burr oak, walnut, or mahogany laid over secondary softwoods like pine or oak for drawer linings and carcass framing.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, original brass batwing or drop handles, and age-consistent wear around keyholes and feet.

Position the piece as an accent focal point in a hallway, home office, or reception room, offset with modern minimalist lamps or contemporary framed artwork.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity, cleaning gently with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically.
