This Edwardian small purse originates from 1908 and bears the maker's mark CPB for Charles Penny Brown alongside the Birmingham hallmark and lion passant. Formed in dark brown crocodile leather with a glossy finish, the rectangular body incorporates a textured scale pattern across the surface. Sterling silver mounts decorate the lower left and right corners with scalloped edges, and a matching silver push-button clasp sits centrally on the front. Hallmarks appear clearly on both the clasp and the corner mounts. Measuring 5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, the compact accessory functions practically for carrying small essentials or cards inside a handbag, or as a decorative item displayed on a desk in a study or library.

Edwardian accessories from the early 20th century frequently combined refined exotic hides with hallmarked sterling silver mounts and clasps, reflecting a transition towards portable, functional personal items.

These pieces were crafted using tanned hide stitched over a structured leather lining, completed with hand-fitted sterling silver corner mounts and push-clasp mechanisms.

Authentic items feature British assay office hallmarksincluding a makers mark, purity mark, town mark, and date letterstruck directly onto the metal mounts or clasps.

Small antique leather goods are often displayed flat on a tray, arranged within a glass shadow box, or placed alongside other period personal items on a vanity table.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and moisture, nourish the leather with a specialist hide balm, and gently clean the silver mounts with a soft cloth while avoiding contact with the leather.
