This late 19th-century Japanese Meiji-period bronze vase comes in a dark brown colour with a patinated finish. The lobed baluster body displays detailed high relief-carving of sparrows perched among branches. It has a high-waisted neck with a flared top and twin dragon handles, raised on a domed pedestal base with decorative moulding. Minor marks are visible on the surface, which remains unpolished in original condition. The vase measures 43 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or study, this piece sits well upon a wooden sideboard top or display plinth. The bronze construction provides weight and stability for holding dried stems or standing alone as a decorative sculptural object. The dark metallic tones coordinate with traditional wood furniture and leather upholstery in classic interior settings.

During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese bronze casting expanded significantly, shifting from traditional religious commissions to decorative items for international export. Artisans utilised high-relief casting and chasing techniques to detail flora, fauna, and mythological figures.

These vases were typically cast using lost-wax methods, allowing for intricate relief work and sculpted handles. The metal surfaces were subsequently patinated using mineral and chemical baths to achieve deep brown, black, or reddish finishes.

Authentic Meiji bronzes exhibit detailed hand-finishing, substantial physical weight, and naturally aged surfaces on the base and handles. Look for integrated relief motifs, potential maker signatures carved into the base, and genuine surface patination.

Position the vessel on a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to highlight its sculpted silhouette. The dark metallic finish creates textural contrast against contemporary plaster walls and neutral timber surfaces.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or light brush. Avoid applying liquid polishes, abrasive chemical solutions, or water, as these can strip the original chemical patination and accelerate surface oxidisation.
