This pair of early 20th-century Indian brass Bidri ware candlesticks dates from circa 1910 in an Anglo-Indian style. Each piece takes the form of a rearing cobra snake rising from a coiled snake base, supporting a lotus sconce with an engraved foliate pattern covering the brass surface. The metal exhibits a warm golden brass colour with detailed engraved decoration across the hood and body of the cobra. Each candlestick measures 30 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. These items fit well on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study to hold taper candles during evening gatherings.

Cobra-form metalwork originated in India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, created for export and the Anglo-Indian colonial market by incorporating traditional Indian serpent iconography into domestic lighting accessories.

These items were cast in solid brass using sand moulds, after which craftsmen hand-engraved detailed floral, foliate, or geometric patterns onto the surface before hand-finishing.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased surface details, natural oxidisation in recessed areas, hand-fitted threaded components, and minor casting irregularities typical of artisan production.

Position a pair on a dark wood mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard top to add historical depth, sculptural form, and metallic warmth to modern or eclectic interior schemes.

Wipe surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and warm, mild soapy water to remove dust, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina, and melt away residual wax with warm water.
