This Victorian Wellington chest dates from approximately 1850. The piece is constructed from rosewood in a warm brown tone with a noticeable grain pattern and visible patina, standing on a plinth base. The rectangular cabinet houses seven stacked drawers, each fitted with two small turned wooden knobs, alongside carved corbels positioned beneath the top overhang and a hinged side locking bar equipped with a key on the right-hand stile. Measuring 127 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, the vertical proportions allow the cabinet to fit efficiently against a wall in a study, library, or bedroom. Traditional Wellington chests of this form are practical for organising documents, letters, or small personal items within a home office or dressing area. The narrow footprint enables the chest to occupy minimal floor space while offering substantial vertical storage through the multiple shallow drawers. The locking mechanism secures all drawers simultaneously when engaged by the side bar, making the chest useful for safeguarding valuable papers. The rich timber finish and classical Victorian architectural details integrate smoothly with traditional period interiors and antique furniture arrangements.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers from the 19th century, named in honour of the 1st Duke of Wellingtons victory at Waterloo.

These pieces were commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, featuring dovetailed drawer joinery and wooden or brass fittings.

Authentic examples are characterised by a hinged side pilaster or locking bar that secures all drawers simultaneously using a single key mechanism.

Due to its slender profile, a Wellington chest fits effectively into compact hallways, alcoves, or dressing rooms, providing vertical storage without occupying excessive floor space.

Clean the timber surface with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
