Mid-19th Century Mahogany Wellington Chest of Eight Drawers, Circa 1850

19th century
Description

A superb mid-19th century mahogany Wellington chest, circa 1850, of tall, narrow proportions and retaining a particularly pleasing warm colour and patina.

The chest is fitted with eight graduated drawers, each with turned mahogany knob handles and constructed with traditional dovetail joints. The drawers are enclosed by the characteristic hinged locking pilasters, the right-hand pilaster fitted with a lock, allowing all the drawers to be secured simultaneously.

The rectangular moulded top sits above a simple architectural case, raised on a projecting plinth base. The mahogany has developed a rich, mellow colour, with attractive figuring particularly evident to the sides.

Wellington chests were designed to provide substantial storage while occupying relatively little floor space, making this a particularly practical piece for a bedroom, study or drawing room.

In good antique condition with expected marks, knocks and wear commensurate with age and use, all contributing to its character.

English, circa 1850.

Named after the Duke of Wellington to commemorate his victory at Waterloo, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers characterised by a hinged locking flap or pilaster running down one side that secures all drawers simultaneously.

Nineteenth-century Wellington chests were predominantly crafted from solid woods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring pine or oak drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and turned wooden knob handles.

Authentic mid-19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetailing on drawer joints, original brass locks, age-appropriate timber patination, and a side-locking bar that pivots on hinges to overlap the drawer edges.

Due to its compact vertical footprint, a Wellington chest fits into narrow alcoves, hallways, or home offices, providing practical storage for stationery, linens, or collections while adding warm timber tones to a space.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain, while avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to radiator heat.
