Mid 19th Century Mahogany Childs Wellington Chest

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive And Charming Mid 19th Century Mahogany Childs Size, Or Miniature, Wellington Chest, Having Rectangular Top, Over Five Drawers With Replacement Brass Handles Flanked By Pilasters, Raised On Original Plinth Base.

Circa 1860

Height 20 inch (50.8 cm)

Width 16 inch (40.64 cm)

Depth 10 inch (25.4 cm)

Childs size examples of the typical wellington chest of drawers are generally much rarer to find than their full size counterparts, particularly ones like this which are quite a bit nicer than the norm.

This is constructed from good rich mahogany timbers and which retains a good colour and surface and the drawers still operate very well indeed. It also has replacement brass knobs, but they are of high quality and really suit the piece.

This is an incredibly useful, functional and practical piece of furniture around the modern home of course, absolutely perfect for a whole host of places, including as a coffee table beside a settee or chair, as a bedside table, or even as an additional storage piece in a bedroom or office, offering great solutions.

The item comes with working lock and key and just like all the items which we offer for sale it has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled and trained, traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a general clean and tidy plus natural beeswax to ensure it is ready for immediate use once sold.

Circa 1860.

Height 20in.

Width 16in.

Depth 10in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers introduced in the early 19th century and named in honour of the Duke of Wellington. It typically features a single column of drawers secured by a hinged side pilaster with a key lock.

These chests were predominantly crafted from solid timbers and veneers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. Drawer linings were frequently constructed from pine or oak, fitted with turned wooden knobs or brass handles.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer construction, solid timber drawer bottoms, and a functioning side locking bar mounted on brass hinges. Keyholes are situated on the right-hand pilaster rather than on individual drawer fronts.

Due to their narrow footprint and vertical storage, these pieces function effectively as side cabinets, hallway storage for smaller accessories, or desktop chests for organising paper or jewellery collections.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber movement and lacquer cracking.
