This pair of eighteenth-century earthenware dishes belongs to the eighteenth-century faience style, finished with an off-white tin glaze. Each round piece displays a rounded and lobed nonagon rim, a raised foot rim on the rear, and an octagonal central recess. Hand-painted decoration in a manganese purple and yellow palette covers the surface, depicting Chinese gentlemen walking and resting in a flower-filled landscape alongside a nobleman and attendant at the centre. Visible details include a manganese painted border and scalloped edges. Height 7 cm, width 34 cm, depth 34 cm. These decorative dishes suit placement on a sideboard top in a home today. They bring period character to a dining room, living area or hallway display surface, catching the eye as standalone ornamental items or as part of a curated collection of antique ceramics. The classic chinoiserie motifs and distinct colour scheme integrate readily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes, adding historical interest and visual warmth to flat surfaces.

Tin-glazed earthenware, often referred to as faience, majolica, or Delftware, is ceramic pottery covered in an opaque white glaze produced by adding tin oxide to a lead glaze base, frequently decorated with hand-painted oxide pigments before firing.

These pieces were formed from low-fired earthenware clay, dipped in an opaque white tin-glaze suspension, and painted by hand using mineral oxides such as manganese for purple-brown tones and antimony for yellow prior to a single or secondary kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces often feature subtle glaze flaking along exposed edges where the brittle glaze meets the softer earthenware body, alongside irregular hand-drawn brushwork, pinholes in the glaze, and kiln stilt marks on the underside.

Display these dishes standing upright on brass plate stands along a sideboard top, arrange them inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or mount them as wall decor within a curated gallery arrangement to introduce historical pattern and color.

Dust gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding full immersion in water or abrasive chemical detergents that can seep into exposed porous earthenware areas where glaze flaking has occurred.
