Georgian Oak Bureau

18th century
Description

A lovely oak bureau dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has a sloped front above two short over two long drawers, each with brass plate handles and matching escutcheons. Two pulls support the front which opens to reveal a series of small pigeon holes, drawers and a small cupboard. The bureau comes with its original working key for the fall front and it stands on bracket feet.

It is in good condition for its age and the oak has developed a wonderful rich colour over the years. There are general signs of age and use, some old knocks and marks and small splits but no major damages and the piece is strong and sturdy. The hinges have been changed at some point and the handles are not original but overall it displays well. The interior is generally clean and tidy and the drawers open smoothly. It has been cleaned and gently polished, retaining the original patina, and it is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian bureau is fashioned from dark brown oak with a rich colour and visible grain. The piece comprises a slant fall front fitted with a key, positioned above two short and two long graduated drawers. Each drawer front holds ornate brass plate handles and decorative matching escutcheons, accompanied by pull-out lopers to support the opening writing flap. The cabinet rests securely upon traditional bracket feet and displays general signs of age, including historic knocks, marks, and small splits across the timber surfaces. Measuring 99 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, the desk offers practical writing and storage space. Inside the fall front, the fitted interior contains a collection of small pigeon holes, individual drawers, and a central cupboard. The drawers run smoothly and the cleaned framework retains an original patina from decades of use. Suited to a traditional study, home office, or a quiet corner of a living room, the furniture accommodates contemporary stationery and laptop use while retaining a classic aesthetic. The sturdy proportions and compact footprint allow for straightforward placement against a wall in domestic interiors.

FAQs

A Georgian oak bureau is an 18th-century writing desk featuring a sloping fall-front lid that opens to reveal an interior fitted with small drawers and pigeonholes, set above a chest of drawers.

These desks were crafted using solid native timber such as English oak, assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian bureaux display hand-planed timber surfaces, original brass escutcheons with period screws, and pull-out wooden lopers that support the writing flap.

Position the bureau as a functional focal point in a living room, hallway, or study, pairing it with contemporary artwork or modern lighting to create contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish along the grain twice a year, while avoiding proximity to radiators.
