Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian roll top writing desk dates from 1900 and represents the traditional style of a gentleman's library. Constructed from solid oak with a warm brown timber finish, the piece includes a tambour slatted shutter top, twin pedestal drawers flanking a central kneehole aperture, and carved wooden handles fitted with an operable upper lock and keyhole escutcheon. The desk measures 116 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 77 cm deep. Practical storage incorporates fully functional drawers with original internal pen compartments. The piece suits placement in a home study, executive office, or traditional living space as a functional workstation for writing and paperwork organisation.

FAQs

A roll top desk, also known as a tambour desk, features a flexible slatted wooden curtain that slides vertically along curved side tracks to cover or reveal the internal writing surface and storage compartments.

These desks were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, utilising canvas backing attached to narrow timber slats for the tambour shutter, along with brass lock plates and mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic examples typically feature hand-cut or early machine dovetailed drawer joints, original locks stamped with maker marks, canvas backing behind flexible wooden slats, and subtle wear or patination consistent with age around the kneehole and drawer pulls.

Position the piece as a functional focal point in a home office or study setting, paired with modern minimalist lighting or a structured contemporary chair to complement the rich timber tones.

Dust the timber using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically, while keeping the desk away from direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent the wooden slats from warping or sticking.
