This hand-woven Afghan carpet dates from 1930 in a traditional Afghan style. The piece is constructed from wool with a deep red background, featuring dark blue and orange geometric star motifs, repeating medallion patterns, a multi-band border, and fringed ends. The deep pile field is organized with four columns of güls framed by geometric floral borders and multiple guard stripes. The carpet measures 318 cm high by 206 cm wide. This generous size makes the item well-suited for grounding a gentleman's library or warming up a living room floor. Placed directly onto floorboards or under a central table, the textile anchors the room while adding warmth and traditional pattern to domestic spaces.

FAQs

Traditional Afghan rugs are recognized for their dark, rich colour palettespredominantly deep reds, crimsons, and navy tonesand their distinctive geometric patterns. They frequently incorporate repeating octagonal medallions known as guls, surrounded by detailed multi-band geometric borders.

Afghan carpets are traditionally crafted using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, which is knotted onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes are historically used to achieve deep shades of red, terracotta, indigo, and charcoal.

An authentic hand-knotted rug shows slight variations in design symmetry and knot spacing on the underside, mirroring the top pattern clearly. Machine-made imitations typically feature uniform plastic backing or sewn-on fringes, whereas authentic pieces have structural warp fringes woven directly into the carpet body.

A deep red Afghan carpet functions as a grounding element when placed beneath clean-lined contemporary furniture or classic leather seating. Pairing rich tribal floor coverings with neutral walls and natural timber elements creates balanced visual contrast without overwhelming the room.

Regular maintenance requires suction-only vacuuming along the direction of the pile to remove loose dirt without pulling fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean dry cloth rather than rubbed, and professional cleaning by wool rug specialists is recommended periodically.
