Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Anthemion and scroll openwork: classical taste popular for Regency hearths.
Old slotted screws on the reverse: assembly before mass-produced modern fixings.
Dark oxidisation and verdigris in the recesses: long exposure to open fire smoke.
Smooth wear along the front edge: repeated cleaning and hearthside use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 19th-century steel fireplace curb follows a Regency design, taking the form of a semi-elliptical fender with a curved profile and a silver colour. The openwork decoration consists of cast neoclassical scrollwork and palmette motifs arranged in a repeated pattern along the body. A rounded top rail runs the full length, supported by a weighted base moulding at the bottom that provides stability on the hearth. The metal surface displays minor surface patination and historical wear consistent with age, while retaining its original form without visible damage or repairs. Measuring 10 cm high, 70 cm wide and 17 cm deep, this small-scale hearth accessory is suitable for placement in front of an open fireplace or wood-burning stove in a reception room or study. The compact proportions allow it to fit narrower chimney openings while adding a refined metallic accent to period interiors.

FAQs

Introduced widely during the Georgian and Regency eras, fireplace curbs or fenders were designed to retain loose coals and protect timber floorboards or carpets from escaping ash. Polished steel versions featured intricate classical motifs influenced by the Neoclassical revival of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Curbs from this period were crafted from steel, featuring cast or hand-pierced openwork scrollwork and Neoclassical ornamentation such as anthemia and palmettes. The metal was hand-finished and polished to create a reflective border that complemented surrounding hearth fittings.

Authentic Regency steel curbs exhibit hand-finished casting lines, subtle surface wear, and natural oxidisation or pitting consistent with age. They feature traditional classical motifs like palmettes and scrolls without the uniform perfection of modern mass production.

An antique steel curb provides structure and architectural interest when placed at the base of a restored open fireplace or log burner. Its metallic silver finish complements both traditional period hearths and minimalist contemporary fire surrounds.

Maintain the steel surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax or light mineral oil to prevent rust and oxidisation. Avoid using water or harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the historic patina.
