This early 20th-century Arts and Crafts table lamp is constructed from solid brass in a warm metallic tone, presenting a clean profile with an exposed black flexible electrical cord trailing from the base. The English design incorporates a tripod base with gracefully curved legs, a turned central stem rising to a bayonet light fitting, and decorative scroll brackets supporting the upper structure. The surface shows light wear commensurate with age, maintaining an honest patina across the metal components without added ornamentation or colour. Measuring 44 cm high and 21 cm wide, this compact antique occupies minimal surface area while providing structural height. Well suited for placement within a gentleman's library or on a home office desk, the lamp brings understated period character to a working interior. The functional form sits securely on flat surfaces, casting light downward from an elevated position above the desk top. Its restrained aesthetic integrates easily with traditional timber furniture and leather writing surfaces, offering a practical lighting solution that harmonises with period decorative schemes while remaining entirely functional for contemporary daily use in a study or reading nook.

W.A.S. Benson was a prominent English architect and designer who specialised in metalwork during the Arts and Crafts movement, creating functional electric lamps that emphasized fluid metal forms and mechanical innovation.

Lamps from this era were primarily crafted from spun or cast brass, copper, and bronze, often paired with hand-blown glass shades and silk-wrapped electrical flex.

Authentic pieces frequently feature stamped maker marks such as WAS BENSON, distinct stamped patent numbers, specific joint assemblies, and characteristic curved tripod bases.

Place the lamp on a contemporary wooden desk, dark marble console, or bookshelf to create a focal point that contrasts sleek modern surfaces with historical metalwork.

Maintain the natural patina by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip original surface lacquers, and ensuring electrical wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician.
