Description

I haven't had such a lovely pair of "andirons" for a long time.....this fine pair came to me from a private collection and were made around 1740-50 ....they have brass uprights in the form of cabriole legs with ball & claw feet topped off with "urn" finials....they still have the original iron bar supports, which would have been too short to support logs, so it probably would have had a shallow wrought iron basket...very nice quality and in good condition considering all the domestic use they would have had.

English C1740-50.

FAQs

Georgian brass andirons, or fire dogs, date back to the 18th century and were designed to support logs in an open hearth while adding decorative elegance to the fireplace.

These pieces were typically cast in brass for the decorative upright fronts, paired with durable forged iron billets or bars to withstand intense heat.

Authentic period pieces often feature heavy sand-cast brass construction, hand-filed details, period-appropriate casting flaws, and iron components joined by traditional fixings.

They can be placed within a working or decorative fireplace hearth to anchor the rooms focal point, contrasting traditional metalwork against clean modern surrounds.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina. Natural wax can be applied sparingly to protect the brass surface.
