Victorian christening mugs were traditionally gifted to infants to mark their baptism, serving as both a keepsake and a practical investment in precious metal for the childs future.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as hand-chasing, engine-turning, and repousse work, often featuring intricate floral or cartouche motifs.

Authenticity is verified through British hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the standard of silver, the assay office, the date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and the makers mark.

An antique silver mug can be displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table as a decorative object, or repurposed functionally to hold small items such as pens or paintbrushes.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver cloth or polish to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage intricate engraving.
